| Surfin'
with The Beach Boys
Most
Boomers will admit, whether you were a fan or not, the songs of
The Beach Boys was synonymous with summertime fun when we were
pre-teens and teens. The group, started by Wilson brothers Brian,
Dennis and Carl along with their cousin Mike Love and later joined
by friend Al Jardine, had their first hit, Surfin’ in 1961,
launching a career that would span more than four decades.
Singing and Surfin' USA
The group was inducted into the Rock ‘n’
Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and had 32 Platinum and Gold record
awards. The Beach Boys’ California garage band sound is
legendary. Surfin, their first song, made it big on local radio
in Los Angeles, but in 1962, their first single with Capitol Records,
Surfin’ Safari put audiences on notice across the US. From
that time until 1969, Capitol produced 20 Beach Boys albums and
many of these went “Gold.”
Some say the groups’ Pet Sounds album, recorded
in 1966, is one of their very best and Paul McCartney sites it
as his inspiration for the Sgt. Pepper album.
Later Years with the Boys of Summer
The Beach Boys later recorded on the Brother Label,
a family-owned enterprise that produced hit albums well into the
1970s. At the same time, Capitol released “best of”
albums. At the time the band became known as a popular touring
band and a few of the band members ventured out to record solo
albums. In 1988, the band hit all the number one charts yet again
with “Kokomo,” a song they recorded for the movie,
“Cocktail.”
The band continued to perform to sold out audiences
throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Dennis Wilson died in 1984 and
Carl Wilson lost a courageous battle with cancer in 1998 but the
sounds of their band live on in several re-releases and documentaries…a
whole new generation is learning about the music of these “boys
of summer.”
